Sean Ryan is a media executive and business leader best known for launching Nova 106.9 Brisbane and helping turn a brand-new radio station into the number-one station in the market within just three months.

Appointed General Manager before Nova 106.9 had even gone to air, Sean was responsible for helping build the team, culture, commercial operation and identity of a station entering one of Australia’s most competitive radio markets.

The result was extraordinary.

Within three months of launch, Nova 106.9 had reached number one in Brisbane, and the station went on to establish itself as one of the city’s dominant radio brands, including a long run as the leading station among younger audiences.

Sean remained at the helm for almost a decade, helping build not simply a successful radio station but a culture and brand that became deeply connected with Brisbane.

He later moved from radio into a newly created leadership role as Queensland State Director at News Corp Australia, taking his experience in media, commercial strategy, leadership and organisational culture into one of the country’s largest media organisations.

In The 8th Voice, Sean explores what it takes to build something from zero, how culture can become a competitive advantage, the difference between managing people and truly leading them, and what happens behind the scenes when a new idea suddenly becomes number one.
