Ben Hosking

Episode Number

№2

Ben Hosking is a former tactical police officer, counter-terrorism specialist and security professional whose career has been built around operating calmly when the stakes are high and the margin for error is small.

Ben spent more than a decade with the Northern Territory Police Force, beginning in general duties before being selected for the Territory Response Group, the Northern Territory’s specialist tactical policing capability.

The work placed him in environments most people will never experience.

The Territory Response Group is responsible for high-risk tactical operations, counter-terrorism response, search and rescue, dignitary protection and other incidents where preparation, judgement and teamwork can become matters of life and death.

Ben’s experience included specialist tactical policing and protection duties, including working around senior government figures and visiting dignitaries.

After leaving policing, he moved into the Federal Government environment, providing executive advice on national policy before taking his operational experience into the private security sector.

Today, Ben works with Panoptic Solutions, focusing on executive protection, travel risk and security for corporate and VIP clients across Australia and internationally.

He is also co-host of the Wheels Up podcast, where he and fellow security professionals examine what really happens behind the scenes when executives, businesses and families need to operate safely in unpredictable environments.

But Ben’s story is not really about tactical equipment, protection teams or dramatic incidents.

It is about preparation.

His experience has taught him that many crises are not defeated by heroics in the moment. They are avoided because somebody thought carefully about what could go wrong long before it happened.

The spare battery.

The second route.

The person authorised to make the decision at two o’clock in the morning.

The detail nobody notices because nothing went wrong.

In The 8th Voice, Ben explores fear, risk, leadership, preparation and what years of tactical policing teach you about human behaviour under pressure. It is a conversation about staying calm when others cannot, making decisions when information is incomplete, and understanding that the best protection is often the danger nobody ever sees.
